Comp takes

Open a track’s take lanes to see every pass you recorded. Listen through and pick the best sections from each take (maybe the verse from take 2 and the chorus from take 4) to build the final comp. Comping is non-destructive: every original take stays intact, so you can always change your mind.

What you need

  • A track with multiple recorded passes over the same section. Each pass lands in its own take lane instead of overwriting the last one.

How takes work

When you record multiple passes over the same section, each pass lands in its own take lane. The track plays the comp: the sections you’ve selected across takes. Until you’ve made selections, the takes simply sit in their lanes; nothing is lost between passes.

Build the comp

  1. Open the take lanes on the track. Every recorded pass appears in its own lane.
  2. Listen through the takes to find the sections worth keeping.
  3. Select the sections you want from each take: the verse from one, the chorus from another.

Selections can come from any take, in any combination. The verse from take 2 and the chorus from take 4 combine into one seamless performance on the track. The track plays the comp: the sections you’ve currently selected across takes.

What you have now

The track plays one seamless performance built from your selections. The comp is a set of choices, not an edit of the audio: every take’s full recording remains in the project. Reopen the lanes any time to audition a different section, swap one selection for another, or rebuild the comp from scratch.
